Alex is becoming a reader!

Okay, so I am bragging again. Feel free to leave me a mean comment if you are sick of it.......
Quite often in the car, we end up quizzing each other. This started with Hallie and Nadya when we were working on our addition facts. Then we started a spelling competition which worked out really well for Nadya. Well, the other day I was driving to bountiful to drop some supplies off for our Russia trip, and Nadya started to quiz Alex. She was asking him how to spell words and Alex was giving it his best shot. Well, what surprised me, was that Alex was pretty close in almost all the easier words Nadya gave him. For example, Nadya asked him to spell cat, and he said, "KAH- K, AAAHH - A, TAAH, T. "K-A-T" Anyways, it made me think about these really basic reading books I purchased for Nadya called, Bob Books. We never really got the chance to use them with Nadya because it seemed like we just blinked and Nadya was reading and the Bob books were WAY too easy for her. So I got out the red ones, (they are the first level ones) and sat down with Alex. There is a lot of repetition and all the basic short vowel sounds, but once again he amazed me. The first time he read it he was remembering most of the words.(sight reading is the beginning to reading) So, now at night Alex is reading to us. :) I can't believe how well he is doing. I even picked out a new one today and he read most of it with out mistakes. He still has another year before he goes to Kindergarten, but I think if we continue to read with him, he will be one of those kids who enter Kindergarten reading!
Hooray for Alex! Here is a video of him reading.

  1. I was looking though some of my bookmarks and ran across you blog. Your son is so handsome and smart. I am so happy for you. I miss those years when Mick was so small and smart. I was able to kick him into completing tenth grade. He is now on his way to becoming a Junior next year. Time sure does fly. You are a great mom and a great teacher
