Week One on the Farm

The kids found a baby bird.
We tried putting it back into a nest
(not sure if it was the right nest or not)
but, it just hopped right back out.
A little defenseless baby bird would not survive very long on farm,
especially a farm with plenty of barn cats.
So, they took care of it for the day.
Finding worms was very challenging though.

(Carter is pictured with an egg he found from a nest.)

Unfortunately, try as they did, they did not find enough worms for the bird to survive.
Grandma read somewhere that birds eat about about one and half times their weight.
Wow.  I had no idea.

My new camera arrived while Doug and I were in Kentucky.
I love it. I loved my rebel, but really needed wanted something with a higher ISO.
I went back and forth between the rebel t2i and the 50D.
I opted for the 50D for a few reasons and I love it!

The boys found simple things to entertain themselves.
(I promise Grandma that right after I took these
pictures I told them to stop playing in the water.)

And of course they loved going for rides in the combine or tractors.

Carter pouted because it was Alex's turn to go so
he helped mow the lawn with Dad instead.

We ate sweet corn with almost every meal.
Amazingly, good, sweet, buttery sweet corn.
I guess you could call it organic.
Complete with your occasional worm.
(and would you look at those nails!)
Proof that the boys play hard on the farm.

Alex helped Dad and Grandpa shuck corn and didn't
mind at all when they stuck a worm down his shirt.
Had it been either of the girls, the next town over would have heard them scream.
After you shuck the corn, you can feed the husks to Suzy-Q.
She likes them.
Once again, swinging was a hit.
Although they now have four swings instead of one.

The kids also enjoyed climbing trees and playing with Copper.

Carter LOVED picking and EATING raspberries.
The kids helped out at an auction by passing out the items.
There's plenty of fish to catch.
All of the kids had great luck at fishing this time!
(Although  Alex was the only one to pose with his fish)

This particular fishing trip resulted in two five gallon buckets of fish!
Which means staying up late to dress them!

Carter helped Grandma bread the fish and Grandpa fried them.
The boys love fish.  The girls, not so much.

There was more combining to do.
This time both boys got to go.

It's not all fun and games here though.
Carter was told not to tromp around in his socks.
Grandpa busted him doing just that.
whoops.
I love this picture!
It makes me laugh.

It had just rained so the ground was really wet.

The sunsets were amazing and if you were lucky
Grandma would tell you a good night story.

More Iowa posts to come......Really!
I only covered the first week so far!
